I use Ableton Live, and highly recommend it. It’s pricey, but you can try it for free, for 30 days, with no awful restrictions.
Before that I used GarageBand, which came with OS X. If you can, I’d recommend starting with that, only moving onto something else once it starts to feel limited.
Ableton Live is the only ‘digital audio workstation’ that feels intuitive for me, but it doesn’t appeal to everyone. If it’s not your style, there are lots of others worth investigating on Wikipedia. I couldn’t figure out Reaper, but it’s popular (and cheap for personal use).
