In France, protection of musical works enjoys special time extension compensating for the war period (WWI and WWII). […] This is why none of Ravel’s work is public domain in France while it is so in many European countries.
The premiere of the ballet resulted in a number of scandals, including a classical music riot. According to the painter Gabriel Fournier, one of the most memorable scandals was an altercation between Cocteau, Satie, and music critic Jean Poueigh, who gave Parade an unfavorable review. Satie had written a postcard to the critic which read, “Sir and dear friend – you are an arse, an arse without music! Signed, Erik Satie.” The critic sued Satie, and at the trial Cocteau was arrested and beaten by police for repeatedly yelling “arse” in the courtroom. Satie was given a sentence of eight days in jail.
Bach – Goldberg Variations 1–3 (5:00)
Continuing my quest to learn to read sheet music by, uh, reading sheet music. I’m still sequencing with Ableton Live, as I don’t have a piano (or the ability to use one), but Ableton’s Grand Piano instrument sounds lovely.
(I’m using the Open Goldberg score, which is governed by a Creative Commons Zero license.)
Goldberg Variations: Aria (3:50)
Square wave synth rendition of another Bach piece.
In a Landscape for piano, by John Cage (via hintersatz)
This is so beautiful!
The rhythmic structure is 15 x 15 measures (5-7-3), following the structure of the dance for which it was written. The piece is similar to Dream, but the fixed gamut of tones is more extensive. Resonances are sustained throughout the composition, by using both pedals. The sound of the composition is very soft and meditative, reminding of the music of Erik Satie.
Bach – Cello Suite No. 1 for synthesizer solo: Prelude
I synthesized a nice little Bach melody, one you might have heard before. (Previously: Beethoven.)
Writing prompt: Given a few prompt words, spell out each word and use the letters to start new words, creating sentences. For example, hi and dog could lead to: ‘Hoarding ice. Discover old gongs.’
I got this from an ‘acronym contest’, where the prompt words were Thursday, premium, and winner (I can only imagine why). Here’s what I wrote:
Treacherous house under renovation: stately, detached, all yellow. Private residential entrance marked in unusual maroon. We’re inside now, noseying each room.
